Omega is gathering three of the West's most prominent Buddhist teachers for an exclusive weekend program. Explore the ancient, life-changing power of Buddhist teachings and the latest research in contemporary Western psychology to tap into the healing wisdom for lasting happiness inherently within each of us. Combining meditation with psychology, this program offers us practical ways to deal with the stress, fear, conflict, and anxiety that are a part of modern life.

Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, and Mark Epstein lead this program with teachings, guided meditations, clinical examples, experiential learning, and stories of personal transformation, in a spirit of joy, compassion, and good humor born of a meditative mind and living from the heart.

Those new to Buddhism and seasoned practitioners alike learn positive approaches to awaken our own capacity of love, joy, and freedom in ourselves and in those around us. Health-care practitioners in a variety of fields-mental health, social work, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, counseling, and psychology-can increase their own self-understanding and bring new dimensions to their therapeutic repertoire.

This extraordinary program can be taken in one of two ways. Session 1 can be taken on its own for a program fee of $45. Session 1 and 2 may only be taken together for a program fee of $195.

Western psychology and Eastern Buddhist psychology have become partners in one of the greatest of human quests-the exploration, understanding, healing, and awakening of the human heart and mind. In three individual talks given by Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, and Mark Epstein, and then in a group question-and-answer session, we explore Eastern and Western psychology-how they differ and how they are similar-and how one can inform the other to awaken our unlimited capacities for happiness.
Session 2

The Art & Science of Meditation
A Day With Jack Kornfield, PhD and Tara Brach, PhD
Course UW08101
$195 (Fee includes the Friday night event)

This daylong program delves deeper into the material covered during the previous evening's presentations. Together we mine the rich tradition of Buddhist insight meditation and modern revolutionary research in mindfulness and neurobiology to explore how Western psychology is substantiating and expanding upon the 2,500-year-old Eastern wisdom tradition.

Drawing on Jack Kornfield's new book, The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology, and on the seminal work in Eastern-Western psychology of Tara Brach, this program offers theoretical and experiential learning; practical tools for therapists, and new insights for meditation practitioners, healers, and all others interested in the path of inner transformation and the development of a wise and loving heart.

Our time together includes meditation practice, lectures, case studies, stories of transformation, and discussion. We focus on a range of integrated topics, including:
  • Buddhist psychology's core principles of mental health and well-being
  • How to incorporate compassion and forgiveness into our work and our life
  • The collaboration of meditation and psychotherapy
  • Practices for transforming difficult emotions at their root
  • Research demonstrating the practical effects of meditation to benefit body and mind
  • The wisdom of positive psychology and the cultivation of positive states of mind
  • Intention and motivation as essential tools for change
  • Medication and meditation
  • Practices of mindfulness and loving-kindness
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
  • Cite the 12 basic principles of Buddhist Psychology that lead to positive well being
  • Practice and discuss the use of meditations from the Buddhist traditions in clinical work and as ways to quiet the mind and open the heart
  • Compare and contrast Eastern and Western approaches to mental health
  • Describe how Buddhist tools such as mindfulness and compassionate mind-changing can be applied in clinical settings
  • Examine ways to help clients transform states of shame, fear, guilt, anger and confusion using Buddhist principles
  • Expand the range of psychological development from the DSM-4 to a whole broad spectrum of higher Human Psychological Possibilities.
