Ever wonder why there are so many women and children in poverty and so few women in leadership?
In the United States, women without children make 90 cents to a man’s dollar, mothers make 73 cents, and single mothers only make about 60 cents. Countries with family-friendly policies and programs do not have the wage gaps that we do here. The United States is one of four countries out of 173 that have no paid leave for new mothers. It’s time for change.
Moms Rising is about exploration, action, and movement building. Led by cofounders of MomsRising.org, Joan Blades and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, we hone tools for modern activism through storytelling, art, and exercises in organizing. As a group, we create campaign projects for discussion and possible real-life implementation.
We also learn to expand conversations with leaders in the women’s movement about how we are going to transform our lives, our communities, and ultimately the country.
Anyone who wants to help harness the power of motherhood and family to help build a truly family-friendly nation is welcome.
Joan Blades is a cofounder and board member of MoveOn.org, which has an online membership of more than 3 million. On Mother’s Day 2006, she cofounded MomsRising.org to tap the power of online grass-roots organizing for mothers and families in the United States. She is also coauthor of The Motherhood Manifesto.
Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner is a cofounder and executive director of MomsRising.org. She is author of The F-Word: Feminism in Jeopardy and coauthor of The Motherhood Manifesto.
